Modern Statistical Thinking for Biologists (online 2023-)
“Brilliant course. I could not imagine how much it would transform my view of statistics and my view of my capabilities both with data analysis and with R. This course builds a solid foundation for formulating stronger research questions and for learning to simply play with data! Immensely reduced my fears of entry into this world.”

“I decided to take this course because I had wanted to learn the Bayesian statistical approach for a long time. But the course exceeded my expectations. Not only did I learn the basics of Bayesian statistics, but I also better understood probability theory and Frequentist statistics. The course clarified my old doubts and these epiphanies give me enormous satisfaction. I am very happy to have taken this course, which I recommend to everyone!”

“Rosina is an excellent teacher and the course is very good. The knowledge acquired is very up-to-date and useful in any field of study.”

Analysis of RNA-seq data (online, 2022-)
“This course was so gratifying because it was challenging but also gave me the tools to meet those challenges. The skills we learned are directly relevant to my research, and I've been putting them in practice as we've gone along. Rosina did a great job creating a learning community - you could tell at the end of the last class that no one wanted to hang up our Zoom call because we didn't want the course to be over!”

“It takes a special teacher to simplify RNA-seq concepts and to motivate students through a computer screen. Rosina did just that! Her ability to quickly adapt to the students' needs and to modify the lessons/assignments on the spot, makes this the course you cannot miss. ”

“I feel like this is the perfect beginner's course for RNASeq analysis. It reinforced my critical thinking and gave me the right tools to start working on my data. It was the right balance between practice and theory, which included group discussions and individual exercises.”

“I really loved the course structuring, where the sessions was linked and built upon. Plus I really liked that the focus was on understanding the theory and not just writing R-codes. Rosina's explanation was very clear and helpful. I would definitely recommend the course. ”

“I think this is the perfect course to start your RNAseq analysis path! Rosina is a very good teacher and she explains perfectly the concepts behind specific types of analysis hand in hand with their practical application, in a way that keeps the class engaged!”

“This course has been of great benefit to me as a Ph.D. student. I would recommend it to anyone who is doing transcriptomics. I feel confident and ready to tackle my own datasets now, which initially seemed very intimidating. Glad to have taken this course with Rosina who is a great teacher. Thanks. ”

“I signed up for this training with a very basic knowledge of the R language. After completing the training I feel that I learned a lot about how RNAseq data are generated and how to represent them using R. I think this course gives you everything you need to know to treat your own data.”

“The course was very interesting. I didn't know R language but it was quite simple to follow and learn. Rosina was kind and helpful, also to repeat the topics more than one time, if anyone was lost. I recommend everyone to attend this course, because it provides excellent knowledge.”

“Rosina is a brilliant teacher! After the course I feel confortable using R , and I did not have previous experience using it. Highly recommended!”

“Whether you have done RNAseq analysis before or not, this course will fit your needs. Rosina is an excellent teacher, she dedicates time to explain each and every concept applied in the analysis.”

Introduction to Data Analysis for Biologists (Institute of Molecular Medicine, Lisbon, October to December 2021)
“The course was a fantastic dive into the statistics needed for most common science questions. Rosina is hands-down one of the most talented professors I have come across. She has an innate ability to make complex concepts simple and easy to understand, and goes behind her way to provide all the support needed. I couldn't recommend more!”

“The course was great. We learned very useful data analysis topics and skills. The use of R and RStudio was very welcome for those who face programming languages once in a while or on a daily basis however, it was taught in a newcomer friendly mannder. Overall, it was an amazing course!”

“An amazing course, I highly recommend Rosina as a teacher for R and statistics. Everything becomes so simple with her explanations !”

“"I really really liked the course I think you explain the concepts in a really nice and practical way. I was familiar with the concepts before but I never really knew what they meant! I would like if the course had a follow up and we could continue learning about R and it’s potentials in one hand and about statistics in another!"”

“Excellent course. Rosina is a great teacher! The course is very well structured, with lots of practical examples and exercises that are really helpful to help in the understanding of the concepts. I would fully recommend the course. Thank you Rosina!”

“Having other previous experience with statistics classes in uni, I never had someone explaining statistics in such a clear and enthusiastic way what is a sample vs population, what is a p-value or the different types of distribuitions we talked about in this small course, while giving relevant examples for the people in the biomedical/biological research area. For a PhD student in the beggining of their studies, I think this course was very important for me and will for sure be very useful in helping me decided the best way for me to analyse my future data. The fact that we had to learn a bit of R to do the exercises throughout the course was a big plus as I always wanted to learn the language but never had the time. I loved having Rosina as a teacher and truly recommend this course for people trying to (re)learn statistics!”

“Well-structured and carefully developed for all kinds of audience: from basics (definition of p values) to more "not-so-advanced" statistics (linear regressions). Overall, nice workflow (good ratio of individual and group assignments) and planning for the entire course. Amazing instructor - really engaging and attentive to students' needs and difficulties - always ready/available to help. For someone that really wants to learn the fundamentals of statistics this is the course to do!”

“It was a really good and usefull course! It teachs from the basic line os statistics until the more complex view of data. Also it is amazing the passion that Rosina has in teaching and to make students clear about all different topics! I was always confortable to ask questions and she always fixed a way to explained me what was not so clear. Very good and I higly recommend this course!”

“"I am really glad I took this course. For the first time I was interested in statistical analysis and I am sure I will not apply statistical test in a ""blind way"" again. Learning all using R was a great plus, just what I needed to analyze my high-dimensional data. I cannot wait to use all of these tools. Thank you Rosina! "”

“In the Data Analysis Course, I have learned to apply statistics to different settings because Rosina carefully explained the reasoning behind every method. Rosina knows how to motivate students and has a natural capacity for teaching concepts to every level of expertise; she deconstructs your logic and makes sure you are the one solving every difficulty on your own without leaving your side.”

Introduction to Data Analysis for Biologists (Arabic version; online from February to May 2022, in collaboration with Egypt Scholars)
“One of the best courses I have ever taken. The course changed my understanding of data analysis and how to choose and apply different statistical analysis in different situations. This will help me a lot in my future research. ”

“My comments on the course: “Introduction to data analysis for biologists” taught by Dr. Rosina Savisaar 1. Statistics is important – no one can deny that. Despite having some prior superficial knowledge of the concepts taught in this course, I always felt that I need to strengthen my understanding of these concepts not only to help me with analyzing my research results as a PhD student but also to understand what’s happening around me in life in a more science-based statistical way. This course gave me what I needed; to understand the logic behind each statistical concept – its use, application, and interpretation. 2. Throughout the course, Dr. Savisaar successfully used a blend of teaching methods that all aimed at thinking, interaction, and understanding rather than memorizing. These methods included brain storming, group working, and one on one commentary feedback on homework assignments. 3. Dr. Savisaar was very patient in answering any questions that arise from students in the sessions, very responsive to students’ questions and comments related to the assignments, and always giving helpful and insightful feedback to every assignment. 4. In my opinion, this course is very helpful to both undergraduate and graduate students aiming at understanding rather than memorizing the basic concepts of data analysis.”

“This course was exceptional in many ways. If there was a rating system out of 10, I would give 9.8! Here's a quick break down of exceptional qualities: (I'll filter out personal stuff -like my own love for statistics to make it as objective as possible) 1) The way the course is structured. - People my not realize at the first glance, but this course did not only teach statistical concepts, it taught R as well! These are usually taught separately, but brilliantly blending both like that magnifies the learning experience. - The utilization of breakout rooms for practical group work solidified concepts and made new friendships! 2) The way this course is instructed. - This was not a mere materialistic success, but also instructional success. Dr.Rosina's combined love for statistics and teaching was evident on her effort and fast responses. Not only addressing every question on live and in assignments, but also providing extra comments. It's hard to imagine that what she does individually for each student in all assignments is done for all other students as well. This is marvelous. - (this one is psychological but is a must say) Dr.Rosina is extremely joyful and friendly! I would not have been enthusiastic to participate if not for her spirit! And here's a short break down of some areas that could be improved (Although I am convinced they may not be improved, because they are related to me as an individual and not strictly to the course, but why not share it anyways :) 1) The course pace I felt hungry to consume more at a faster rate. I am a relatively fast reader. I also love to hear lectures at x2 speed and love to jump between concepts quickly. (this also makes me talk a little fast which is not always good -I only talked slower in the meetings because I forced my self to xD) 2) Final recap at each session and topic Consuming things fast necessitates a recap for my brain to connect between things. This kept on repeating until it became a habit. Usually its me who does the recap for my self; in a form of a mind-map or a series of connected structures of everything I have learned.... but this time I wasn't able to. Yes it would have been helpful to have a readily made recap handed to me, but I completely understand that this is my responsibility towards myself. Again, I know that these are subjective and may not be applicable for everyone else, but I am just sharing out of gratitude. Teaching is a virtuous act and you have done it right :) ”

“A very well organized course with a great deal of knowledge from a mastering experienced instructor. This course has introduced me to data analysis in a simple way with alot of practices during and after the class. You get individualized feedback for your assignments and answers to your questions till you get it. All files are uploaded on time. I liked the assignment where you have the chance to apply what you have learned in the previous class and prepare for the next one. Indeed, some biostatistics concepts are Not easy to grasp but you are not left till you understand it well. With this, R codes become very easy to write of you understand the topic. Another advantage for Arab people is that Rosina speaks Arabic fluently and can explain everything with your mother language. I highly recommend this course for anyone want to dig into the world of data analysis and biostatistics. You will have a strong base to build up on.”

“I am really very grateful for dr Rosina. She is very helpful and patient, always trying to simplify things and makes sure that we understood it well. Although it was the first time for me to use R, you made it look easy. Thank you for your great effort.”
